Brown, the Giants' No. 1 prospect, singled in each of his at-bats but could not lift the listless Flying Squirrels in the finale of their doubleheader as the host New Britain Rock Cats posted a 4-1 victory.

Batting leadoff and playing center field, the same roles he filled so ably last season at Class A Advanced San Jose, Brown is 4-for-9 in his first three Eastern League games. The 21-year-old ranked among the top three in the Cal League in batting (third, .336), runs scored (second, 115), hits (first, a franchise-record 188), triples (first, 13), total bases (second, 290) and steals (second, 53) in 2011.

Flying Squirrels right fielder Juan Perez recorded the fourth and final hit against the Rock Cats' trio of Logan Darnell (1-0), David Bromberg and Bobby Lanigan, who notched his first save.

Richmond starter Craig Westcott (0-1) allowed three runs on five hits over 4 1/3 frames. He starred at San Jose alongside Brown in 2011, going 13-4 with a 3.42 ERA in 25 games.

Brown, a 2010 first-round Draft pick and MLB.com's No. 47 prospect, struck out once in three empty at-bats in the opener, a 6-2 setback.

Rock Cats designated hitter Evan Bigley plated five of his team's six runs, victimizing Flying Squirrels starter Jason Stevenson (0-1), who fanned six before exiting in the fifth.

In the loss, Giants' No. 9 prospect Chris Dominguez doubled twice in three at-bats, drove in a run and scored once. Dominguez, who batted .244 in 78 games at Richmond in 2011, is 6-for-10 with four RBIs in the early going.
